Maine House to Vote on An Act To Ensure Accuracy in the Labeling of Maine Meat and Poultry

May 31, 2019

The Maine House will soon vote on LD 351, titled An Act To Ensure Accuracy in the Labeling of Maine Meat and Poultry. This legislation would require that meat represented as "Maine-raised" or similarly labeled be from animals born and raised in the state.

MOFGA supports this bill. Here's why:

  • It is important for fairness in the market that products from animals born and raised in Maine do not compete with products that are labeled as being produced in Maine when, in reality, these products come from animals born and raised out of state and spend only a brief period of their lives on Maine farms.
  • Some current marketing and labeling practices deceive consumers and create an unfair advantage for meat produced out of state but sold as Maine-produced.

MOFGA's 122 certified organic livestock and poultry farmers, in addition to many other Maine-based livestock and poultry farmers, make considerable financial and labor investments yearly to produce meat products to satisfy the growing demand for Maine-raised meats.

LD 351 offers a great opportunity to support these local farms by ensuring fair and accurate labeling in the marketplace.
