MOFGA Mourns the Loss of Joe Dupere

Joe Dupere

It is with great sadness that we inform members of the MOFGA family that our friend and colleague Joe Dupere passed away on Friday evening, February 28, after suffering a heart attack at his home in Unity, Maine. He was 59 years old.

Joe worked with MOFGA for nearly three years and most recently served as our database manager. He was highly regarded within the MOFGA family, revered for his easy-going manner and the friendly way he treated everyone with whom he worked.

Joe was the son of a Quebecois dairy farmer’s daughter and a Connecticut mechanic’s son. From his mother he inherited his interest in farms and livestock; from his father, his tinkering and fix-it skills. He was born in Panama, where his parents were stationed when his father was in the Army. He also lived in Okinawa and various military bases around the South, finally ending up in rural eastern North Carolina.

He moved to Maine in 1986 to get back to his New England roots. After 20 years at the University of Maine in Orono, he and his wife, Kyle McCaskill, decided to pursue a lifestyle that was more sustainable and in tune with seasonal cycles. They built an off-grid solar, cordwood masonry home in Unity, which Joe and Kyle shared with their dairy goats, American Guinea hogs, chickens, ducks, bees, two dogs and a very talkative parrot.

Joe attended East Carolina University and held dual degrees: one in psychology, which he said helped him deal with people; and one in philosophy, which he said helped him cope with the garden and livestock. His motto was “Incremental Progress.”

Plans for a family and community gathering to honor and remember Joe’s life are evolving, according to Kyle, and will be announced when they become final. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to MOFGA, Farm & Homestead Day Fund, PO Box 170, Unity, ME 04988.
