Level I- November 16th & 17th
8am til dark (breakfast at 7)
Course is SOLD OUT

Level II- 1 day workshop

Friday November 16th OR Sunday November 18th

Registration opens June 12th and will close November 1st.

Chainsaw Safety Level I:

  • Learn the basics of saw mechanics, operation, maintenance, and safety
  • Learn and practice the latest in safe felling techniques

This two-day course covers many aspects of chainsaw use. Day one starts in the classroom with topics including an overview of the chainsaw with nomenclature and safety features, saw chain and saw tooth filing, maintenance, personal protective equipment (PPE) and its use. In the afternoon, the class moves outside and students operate their saws at boring and bucking stations.

Day two consists of mostly outside work, as individuals learn more about safety and proper ergonomics and positioning. Felling tools, wedge use, reactive forces, and felling information are taught as each student progresses to dropping trees. The class reviews the stump and score it. From there, students move to single, double, and swing bores, snag management, spring pole management and firewood stump preparation to buck wood off the ground.

All students are expected to provide a tuned saw, tools, PPE (steel toed boots, leg protection, hearing, eye and head protection) and gloves. This equipment must meet CLP/OSHA standards.
We strongly encourage participants to invest in a good set of chaps, chopper's headgear, and boots.

Chainsaw Safety Level II:

Level II is open to those that have taken Level I AND have had one year of practice.
Friday November 16th OR Sunday November 18th 8am-4pm

MOFGA will again offer a level II chain saw instructional day. This hands-on 1 day session is designed for the saw operator who has experience, but wants to practice and improve upon their technique. A small group size means lots of personalized instruction, and will allow participants to practice their felling and learn advanced techniques in a safe, supportive, fun environment. This class is intended for graduates of our level I class, but saw users with proper experience will be admitted. All participants must have full PPE (helmet, eye and ear protection, chaps and boots) along with a tuned saw. We will take a quick look at PPE, check sharpening skills, and head right into the woods. We will practice boring and the open face notch and then drop trees. Class will be limited to 7 participants.
This is not a day for beginners, nor is it a day for professionals.
Fee $60.00, includes breakfast and lunch.
