Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Walmart Squeezes Organics
The Progressive - 5/30/2014.
By Wenonah Hauter - One of the most frequent questions I get about the food system is what to make of the fact that Walmart sells organic food.
Perspective on Dietary Risk Assessment of Pesticide Residues in Organic Food
Sustainability - 5/30/2014.
By Charles M. Benbrook and Brian P. Baker - Based on USDA data on pesticide residues, Benbrook and Baker find that fraud appears to be rare. Most prohibited residues found in organic produce are detected at levels far below the residues typically found in food grown with pesticides. Relatively high-risk residues are more common in imported foods – both organic and conventional – compared to domestically grown food. The authors conclude that incorporating relative dietary risk into the organic standard would be a more precautionary, risk-based approach than targeting enforcement to organic foods found to contain 5% or more of the applicable Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tolerance.
Hay, Man: The Curious Life and Times of Scarecrows
Modern Farmer - 5/28/2014.
By Lori Rotenberk - As the spring season of seeding and planting unfolds with shoots and blooms, it also marks the time of year long ago in Europe, when children scuttled through the plots, sounding wooden clappers and sending flocks of birds off into fluttering clouds of mayhem.
Cold, wet spring means slow start for farmers, gardeners
Bangor Daily News - 5/26/2014.
By Abigail Curtis - On a cool, damp morning, an eager crowd of shoppers came to the Belfast Farmers’ Market, where they found live music, hot crepes, cheese, meats, bread and seedlings.
