Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
In a city garden, schoolkids learn to cultivate community
Kennebec Journal - 6/30/2010.
By Mechele Cooper – Augusta: Nathan Huynh squatted next to a raised vegetable garden on the east side of Farrington Elementary School and searched for slimy critters slithering up the side of a cabbage plant. The 10-year-old, who volunteered to help maintain the sixth grade's vegetable-and-flower garden this summer, was given the task of sprinkling Sluggo, a snail and slug control product, at the base of each plant.
Permaculturalists will gather in Unity this weekend
Portland Press Herald - 6/30/2010.
By Avery Yale Kamila – For environmentally minded folks, the news these days is grim. But don’t expect to find people lamenting the less-than-stellar state of the world this weekend in Unity. That’s where the sixth annual Northeast Permaculture Convergence comes to Maine for the first time.

Treat kohlrabi like any raw root vegetable
Bangor Daily News - 6/30/2010.
By Sandy Oliver – Kohlrabi is a funny looking vegetable for sure, a little spaceshiplike turnip thing growing above ground, in green or purple, with leaves sprouting out of a smooth baseball-sized round stalk. It is a member of the cabbage family, and the leaves and the enlarged stalk both are good to eat. We harvested our first ones this week.
