2017 Poster for the Common Ground Country Fair

2017 Common Ground Country Fair Poster Unveiled

The 2017 Common Ground Country Fair poster was unveiled during the Maine Agricultural Trades Show this week. The poster features three Columbian Wyandotte chickens roosting. This uncommon variety is well suited to Maine’s climate and is raised for both meat and egg production. Local artist Dwight Gagnon of Benton created the design, which is a delightful and fitting image for the 41st annual Common Ground Country Fair, September 22, 23 and 24.
The poster is now available online through our MOFGA Store.

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
‘Monsanto Protection Act’ would keep GMO crops in the ground during legal battles
Grist - 6/29/2012.
By Twilight Greenaway – The “farmer assurance provision,” an appropriations amendment approved by the agriculture committee, would allow U.S. farmers to plant and grow GMO crops before they’ve been deemed safe. Or, more accurately, if it passes, farmers will be able to plant these crops while legal battles ensue over their safety.
WTO not so COOL: rules against popular US meat labeling law
PRWatch - 6/29/2012.
The World Trade Organization (WTO) issued a final ruling today against the U.S. country-of-origin labeling (COOL) law. This popular pro-consumer policy, which informs shoppers where meat and other foods were raised or grown, enjoys the support of 93% of Americans, according to a 2010 Consumers Union poll. Now Congress must gut or change the law to avoid the application of punitive trade sanctions.
“Farmland Forever” preserves fertile land on Route 15
Castine Patriot - 6/28/2012.
By Anne Berleant – The idea of keeping farmland for farming began in 1985, when the Maine State Legislature passed the Agricultural Viability Act. They were worried that Maine was losing farms and farmland to development and importing a high proportion of its food, Paul Birdsall explained in a recent interview.
Farmland prices sow riches, worry
Portland Press Herald - 6/28/2012.
Minneapolis – Mick Schmiesing is ready to make a play for 80 acres of soil in Blue Earth County, Minn. Bidding starts at $5,000 an acre. The bids climb much higher, past the county record set just a month earlier. After a few tense minutes, Schmiesing wins out with an offer of $8,375 an acre. He looks a bit stunned – he just spent $670,000.
