Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
In a surprising contradiction, Nestle official says GMOs aren’t necessary
Take Part - 8/30/2012.
By Clare Leschin-Hoar – Overhearing someone say genetically modified crops aren’t the solution for feeding a planet ready to burst with 9 billion hungry mouths by 2050 isn’t surprising if it comes from a leader in the organics crowd. But it’s positively jaw-dropping when you hear it coming from a high-ranking corporate executive at Nestlé.
The weather may not be the problem
The Contrary Farmer - 8/29/2012.
By Gene Logsdon – Weather-related contrasts are occurring here in my own Ohio backyard where it barely rained at all from May to August. Close to our farm stand two cornfields just across a narrow road from each other. One has nearly normal corn and the other has drought-stricken corn. The farmers who planted these two fields are both very competent. The soil in both fields is the same. Fertilizer applied was about the same. Rainfall was the same. This contrast appears all over the county, all over the state, all over the Corn Belt. What is going on here?
Fun guy seeks fungi
Portland Press Herald - 8/29/2012.
By Avery Yale Kamila – "Whoa," shouts Dan Agro, a mushroom expert who runs AgroMyco, as he spots a dead birch tree with a characteristic growth coming out of its side. "Come out here." Agro, property owner Nathan Burrill and I have been traipsing through Burrill's mossy, boulder strewn and hilly woods in Windham searching for edible and medicinal mushrooms.

Grist - 8/29/2012.
By Bill Trotter – Gouldsboro: Something new is about to sprout up from the ground at Darthia Farm, where organic farmers Bill and Cynthia Thayer have been growing food and animals on the edge of Gouldsboro Bay since 1976. It’s a new, timber-framed barn. The prior one, which was built in 1859, burned to the ground this past May, killing dozens of animals inside.
