New tests find bee-killing pesticides in 51% of bee-friendly plants from garden centers across U.S. and Canada

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) recently took part in a national research project showing that many bee-friendly home garden plants sold at Home Depot, Lowe's and Walmart have been pre-treated with pesticides that harm and kill bees. Friends of the Earth U.S., the Pesticide Research Institute and SumOfUs coordinated the study and collaborated with MOFGA and dozens of other groups that conducted pesticide sampling across the United States and Canada.

Don’t drink the weed killer: Atrazine taints rural groundwater
Grist - 11/30/2011.
By Tom Laskawy – If you want to understand all that is wrong with our government's environmental safety priorities, you need only look at the sad story of the weed killer atrazine. Despite the fact that study after study has demonstrated its dangers, it remains one of the most commonly used herbicides in the U.S. – to the tune of 76 million pounds a year.
The exoneration of cheese: why it may be good for your heart
The Atlantic - 11/30/2011.
By Beth Fontenot – Take heart, cheese lovers! What was once considered off-limits for heart health may have just found redemption. Danish researchers compared the effect of cheese and butter on heart health parameters and found that cheese did not increase LDL levels, and in fact, lowered them when compared with butter intake of equal fat content.
Cod comeback or cod collapse?
OnEarth - 11/29/2011.
By Barry Estabrook – Are the embattled populations of Atlantic cod collapsing or making a comeback? The answer varies according to whom you ask, and when you ask them. Fishermen and fisheries officials were taken aback earlier this month by an initial assessment of Gulf of Maine cod populations conducted by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Patricia Fiorelli, a spokeswoman for the New England Fishery Management Council, said, "There is a lot of speculation that cod populations are dramatically lower than anyone expected."
New study confirms atrazine’s effects across a range of species (including us)
Natural Resources Defense Council - 11/29/2011.
By Andrew Wetzler – With every passing year the evidence of atrazine's harmful environmental and human health effects grows stronger. Now a new study, summarizing over a decade of research, has further confirmed some truly scary stuff about atrazine, the most commonly detected pesticide contaminant of ground and surface water: atrazine both "demasculinizes" and "feminizes" vertebrate male gonads.
