Local duo taps into maple wine, spirits market

By Leslie Bridgers – Oakland: Bruce Olson and Steve Buchsbaum thought it would be a lot of work to start distilling their own maple brandy. But they didn't know it would be impossible. By its legal definition, brandy is made from fruit, Buchsbaum said. So, what do you call a spirit distilled from fermented maple syrup? "It doesn't fit into any category," he said.

But now, not only are most farmers markets looking for locations to expand in the off-season, but newly formed markets such as the Woodlawn Farmers’ Market in Ellsworth are being set up on the assumption they will operate year-round.
