Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Keeping cucumber beetles at bay should not involve toxic chemicals
Bangor Daily News - 7/30/2011.
By Reeser Manley – As I write this column, striped cucumber beetles in plague proportions are feeding on cucumbers and squash plants in many Maine gardens. I squashed two of these small creatures in our garden, but many gardeners are reporting hordes.
Artisan Bread Fair draws variety of bakers, eaters
Kennebec Journal - 7/30/2011.
Skowhegan – Donna Mionis was among friends Saturday at the 2011 Artisan Bread Fair at Skowhegan State Fairgrounds. "These people are my people," she said, standing underneath an awning surrounded by more than 300 loaves of her garlic dill, cinnamon raisin, oatmeal, spinach cheddar and seven-grain bread. "People who love bread come here."
Census: Rural share of American population at record low
Kennebec Journal - 7/28/2011.
By Hope Yen, Associated Press – Washington: Rural America now accounts for just 16 percent of the nation's population, the lowest ever. The latest 2010 census numbers hint at an emerging America where, by mid-century, city boundaries become indistinct and rural areas grow ever less relevant. Many communities could shrink to virtual ghost towns as they shutter businesses and close down schools, demographers say.
Battle of the bugs
Portland Press Herald - 7/28/2011.
By Beth Quimby – Freeport: A non-stinging wasp that likes to build its nests in baseball diamond dirt is helping Maine entomologists detect an insect that has decimated millions of ash trees in the Midwest. The Cerceris fumipennis wasp is the best weapon that researchers have for determining whether the emerald ash borer has made its way to Maine.
