Garelick farms to close Bangor production facility, lay off 35
Bangor Daily News - 10/31/2012.
By Whit Richardson – Bangor: Citing competitive pressures, Garelick Farms is ending production at its Bangor facility and laying off 35 employees. Garelick’s parent company, Texas-based Dean Foods, has decided to phase out production at the Bangor facility over the next two months and close permanently in January, Jamaison Schuler, a spokesman for Dean Foods, told the Bangor Daily News. The Bangor facility predominantly produces fluid milk, Schuler said.
Grim reapings from the industrial food system
Portland Press Herald - 10/31/2012.
By Avery Yale Kamila – Today is the day when we go out of our way to consume creepy eats – eyeball appetizers, bug-encrusted cupcakes and kitty litter cake. Why not? But for people like me – science majors who spend too much time reading lengthy tomes about the unappetizing realities of modern food and farming – we don't need Halloween to cause our dinner to give us nightmares. Better school lunches should taste better too
The Contrary Farmer - 10/31/2012.
By Gene Logsdon – Seems to me that if we want school kids to eat lettuce, broccoli, carrots, peas, green beans, corn, potatoes, tomatoes, whole wheat bread, fruit cocktail etc. etc., we have an obligation to make these foods taste as good as fast food hamburgers and French fries.
The many benefits of multi-year crop rotations
Farmland LP - 10/30/2012.
By Jason Bradford – Farmland LP’s agricultural practices are based on good science and agronomic principles, and a 9-year research project from America’s heartland continues to support what we do. “Increasing Cropping System Diversity Balances Productivity, Profitability and Environmental Health” is the title of a research paper by scientists from Iowa State University, University of Minnesota and the USDA published earlier this month in the journal PLOS One.
