Know Your Organic Producers!

Meet Suzanne Balbo and Clint Towle of MOFGA-certified organic Crooked Door Farm in Whitefield. The two MOFGA journeypersons raise vegetables on permanent beds using minimal tillage, a biodiesel walk-behind tractor and a variety of hand tools, including a broad fork. They also use organic seed and local, organic compost on the 3 acres they have in rotation. An unheated greenhouse, a seedling house, caterpillar tunnels and low hoops help extend the growing season. Laying hens and guinea hogs root around, while a neighbor's goats and sheep rotate around Crooked Door's nearly 14 acres of pasture. Balbo and Towle market through their CSA, at the Gardiner Area Farmers' Market, the Gardiner Co-op & Café, the Sheepscot General Store and from their farm. By Reeser Manley – The new year brings catalogs by snail mail and email invitations to online catalogs, each sender hankering for a fraction of my seed money for 2012. I know something about the business of selling garden seeds. My first paying job in horticulture was with the George W. Park Seed Co. in Greenwood, S.C., a position I eagerly accepted when it became clear, back in 1975, that a master’s degree in botany plus 50 cents would buy a cup of coffee.
Organic farmers’ suit against Monsanto goes to full hearing

A court hearing in New York City at the end of this month will determine if a "pre-emptive" lawsuit by a clutch of U.S. and Canadian organic producers against seed and ag chem firm Monsanto will go ahead. U.S. District Judge Naomi Buchwald said she will hear oral arguments Jan. 31 in Manhattan on a motion by St. Louis, Mo.-based Monsanto to dismiss the suit filed last March 31 by a group of 83 farmers, seed growers and farm organizations.

By Jason Bradford – With the holiday season behind us many are feeling the effects of eating a bit too much and are working on a New Year’s resolution to shed some pounds. This reminds me of a question I have been asked numerous times, i.e., “How much land does it take to feed somebody for a year?” To rid you of any suspense, I usually give the answer as about one acre when referring to the U.S. today.
