Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Hillary Clinton Goes to Bat for GMOs at Biotech Conference
Common Dreams - 7/3/2014.
By Max Ocean - Speaking at a conference in San Diego last week for the world's largest trade organization of biotechnology firms, potential presidential candidate Hillary Clinton backed GMOs and Big Ag, further displaying her allegiance to the industry in the eyes of sustainable food and organic advocates.
It's all about the soil!
Resilience - 7/3/2014.
By Shawndra Miller - It was an honor to meet Growing Power founder Will Allen last weekend. The urban farming advocate was in town to support the work of his student Linda Proffitt at Peaceful Grounds. The former pro basketball player told me that he learned how to broadcast seed as a child. He can pick up a handful of seed and not drop one of them. He has the muscle memory for broadcasting those seeds, whether arugula or chard or carrots – and all require different release rates. His sharecropper father taught him as a child, and all these years later, he retains the skill. Now he sows great swaths of salad greens in his Milwaukee farm operations.
Would new herbicide threaten school children?
The Des Moines Register - 7/3/2014.
By Donnelle Eller - Iowa school children could face increased health risks with federal approval of a new herbicide, a Washington, D.C., environmental group says in a report today. But the company behind the product says that scientists have repeatedly debunked the claims and that the herbicide is safe. The Environmental Working Group says 5,609 U.S. schools – including 269 schools in Iowa – sit within 200 feet of farm fields that may be "soon blanketed with massive amounts" of a new herbicide that contains the compound 2,4-D.
Fungus that saps strength of white pines spreading in Maine
Portland Press Herald - 7/3/2014.
By North Cairn - A fungal disease affecting white pines is growing worse in southern Maine, state forestry and entomology officials said Wednesday. White pine needle disease, possibly exacerbated by above-average rainfall across the region, has reached epidemic proportions in Maine, mostly in southwestern and central western parts of the state, said William Ostrofsky, forest pathologist for the Maine Forest Service.
