Thursday, November 13
6:30 to 8 p.m.
Portland Museum of Art
7 Congress Square, Portland

The Portland Museum of Art and MOFGA are collaborating again this fall to bring you the film "Hanna Ranch." This feature documentary is about visionary cattleman Kirk Hanna and his personal struggle to protect a once-prominent way of life in Colorado. Born into life on the family ranch, Hanna became a leader in the environmental ranching movement that set out to protect the West from the relentless encroachment of development and misuse. The film will be followed by a Q & A with Karl Kister, one of the executive producers of the film, and a lively panel discussion.
Film details. MOFGA and PMA members are FREE, regular admission is $8. Members can pre-register on-line and use the discount code "MOFGA" at check-out.

Environmental Working Group - 10/10/2014.
By Mike Lavender - Cleaner water in the Chesapeake Bay could mean billions of dollars in economic growth for the region. That’s the conclusion of a peer-reviewed economic assessment released earlier this week (Oct. 6) by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, which found that fully implementing a Chesapeake Bay cleanup plan would result in at least $22.5 billion a year in economic benefits for farmers, businesses, recreation, homeowners and others.

Third World Network - 10/10/2014.
South-North Development Monitor - Plant variety protection based on the 1991 Act of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV 91) will make it harder for small-scale farmers to access improved seeds, a key feature of the right to food of resource-poor farmers, says a new report.
Balancing birds and biofuels: Grasslands support more species than cornfields
Science Daily - 10/9/2014.
University of Wisconsin-Madison - Scientists have examined whether corn and perennial grassland fields in southern Wisconsin could provide both biomass for bioenergy production and bountiful bird habitat. The research team found that grassland fields supported more than three times as many bird species as cornfields, and new findings indicate grassland fields may represent an acceptable tradeoff between creating biomass for bioenergy and providing habitat for grassland birds.
