Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Senate approves bill that exempts farmers who sell raw milk from licensing requirements
Bangor Daily News - 6/5/2013.
By Whit Richardson - The Maine Senate approved a bill on Wednesday that would allow farmers to sell small quantities of raw milk directly to consumers without getting a license as long as the milk is clearly labeled.
Closing in on our seeds
Corporate Europe Observatory - 6/5/2013.
For the first time in their history, European institutions will reform the entire package of legislation related to seed marketing using the so-called 'Better regulation framework', a strategic approach used by the European Commission to “simplify” existing EU legislation. Since seeds are the starting point for the whole human food chain, the EU's attempt to consolidate the seed industry is hugely significant. High Fructose Corn Syrup: Clue to Bee Colony Collapse Disorder?
Maine Public Broadcasting - 6/4/2013.
By Jay Field - Researchers say they may finally have a clue to what's contributing to the collapse of honey bee colonies in the U.S. Scientists at the University of Illinois argue that high fructose corn syrup and other honey substitutes are robbing bees of compounds that strengthen their immune systems.
Monsanto Still Testing Genetically Modified Wheat in Two States
Common Dreams - 6/4/2013.
By Andrea Germanos - The news of Monsanto's genetically modified (GM) wheat that turned up on an Oregon farm has brought repeated assurances that trials of this GM wheat stopped years ago. But Bloomberg has reported that the company planted 150 acres of GM wheat in Hawaii last year and 300 acres of GM (also known as genetically engineered or GE) wheat in North Dakota this year. Monsanto did not disclose the specific herbicides these trial wheat crops are bred to tolerate, Bloomberg added.
