‘Dead zone’ grows in Chesapeake Bay

The Washington Post – A giant underwater "dead zone" in the Chesapeake Bay is growing at an alarming rate because of unusually high nutrient pollution levels this year, according to Virginia and Maryland officials. They said the expanding area of oxygen-starved water is on track to become the bay's largest ever.

He remembers asking Chef Tony Rossi, who hosts the dinners at the Shipyard Brew Haus restaurant at Sugarloaf Inn, to repeat the foreign-sounding word, coined to describe people who eat locally produced food.

More than 100 farms in 16 counties opened their barn doors to the public on Sunday for Maine's 22nd annual Open Farm Day, sponsored by the state Department of Agriculture.

By Damian Carrington – The warming of the Arctic is releasing a new wave of banned toxic chemicals that had been trapped in the ice and cold water, scientists have discovered. The researchers warn that the amount of the poisons stockpiled in the polar region is unknown and their release could "undermine global efforts to reduce environmental and human exposure to them."
