$100 per person; $135 for two people coming from the same farm. Lunch is included.

This one-and-a-half day workshop is designed to help both established and beginning farmers and is best suited for those with at least one year of farm production data or similar experience. The aims of the workshop are to plan for profit, examine YOUR farm enterprises, better understand financial statements and to learn about creating production and recordkeeping efficiencies. Attendees should come prepared with their farm's financials from the most recent season including your crop plan, income, expenses and sales figures as well as calculator and or computer.

The workshop covers the following topics:

  • Planning for Profit
  • Making a Profit on YOUR farm
  • Enterprise Analysis
  • Marketing
  • Recordkeeping Strategies
  • Creating Production Efficiencies

Instructor Richard Wiswall is the owner/operator of Cate Farm in Vermont and author of "The Organic Farmer’s Business Handbook."

By David Robinson – Carrabassett Valley: Al Keene first heard about a locavore at a seasonal dinner started three years ago by a chef in Carrabassett Valley. He remembers asking Chef Tony Rossi, who hosts the dinners at the Shipyard Brew Haus restaurant at Sugarloaf Inn, to repeat the foreign-sounding word, coined to describe people who eat locally produced food.

By Emma Bouthillette – Freeport: Animals from the song "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" came to life Sunday for children visiting Wolfe's Neck Farm during the 22nd annual Open Farm Day. Holding her 2-year-old son, Oliver, Jess Muise reached over a feeding trough to treat a sheep to a carrot. Muise said she takes any chance she gets to bring her son outside and introduce him to new things. Inside the barn at Wolfe's Neck Farm, Oliver met sheep, goats and week-old chicks up close.
‘Dead zone’ grows in Chesapeake Bay

The Washington Post – A giant underwater "dead zone" in the Chesapeake Bay is growing at an alarming rate because of unusually high nutrient pollution levels this year, according to Virginia and Maryland officials. They said the expanding area of oxygen-starved water is on track to become the bay's largest ever.

By Damian Carrington – The warming of the Arctic is releasing a new wave of banned toxic chemicals that had been trapped in the ice and cold water, scientists have discovered. The researchers warn that the amount of the poisons stockpiled in the polar region is unknown and their release could "undermine global efforts to reduce environmental and human exposure to them."
