Know Your Organic Producers!

Meet farm manager Tess Faller and assistant manager Anna Davis of Beech Hill Farm on Mt. Desert, which produces 5 acres of MOFGA certified organic vegetables, herbs and flowers and 1 acre of heirloom apples. The farm is owned by College of the Atlantic. Faller and Davis, with the help of COA students, provide organic produce to the MDI community. Previously the farm was owned by Barbarina and Aaron Heyerdahl, who donated it to COA in the late 1990s. Beech Hill Farm markets to COA's food service, A&B Naturals, Sawyers Market, Pine Tree Market, from the farm stand and through its summer and fall CSA programs. The USDA’s working definition of a food hub is a “centrally located facility with a business management structure facilitating the aggregation, storage, processing, distribution, and/or marketing of locally/regionally produced foods.”
Canned soup linked to elevated levels of BPA

By Kay Lazar – Eating canned soup may be convenient, but it can significantly raise the level of bisphenol A in a consumer’s body, according to a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health. The Harvard study found that people who consumed a serving of canned soup each day for five days had BPA levels more than 10 times higher in their urine then after they ate fresh soup daily for five days.

In May, an article in Clinical Infectious Diseases reported that half of U.S. meat from major grocery chains – turkey, beef, chicken and pork – harbors antibiotic resistant staph germs commonly called MRSA. Turkey had twice and even three times the MRSA of all other meats, in another study.
