No Secret Farm Bill and other things to be thankful for
Grist - 11/22/2011.
By Tom Laskawy – Mark Bittman has provided the ultimate Thanksgiving guide for anyone interested in making our broken food system work again. His exhaustive list of the 25 people or groups for which he is most thankful is a must-read. It starts with nutritionist and food system reform pioneer Marion Nestle and ends with "anyone who's started a small farm in the last five years, and anyone who's supported one; anyone who cooks, and especially anyone who teaches others to cook."
Capturing synergies to build healthy communities in the Southwest borderlands
Gary Nabhan - 11/22/2011.
By Gary Paul Nabhan – The term food hub has become used more and more frequently as one of several means to build and strengthen regional food systems. The USDA’s working definition of a food hub is a “centrally located facility with a business management structure facilitating the aggregation, storage, processing, distribution, and/or marketing of locally/regionally produced foods.”

Boston.com - 11/22/2011.
By Kay Lazar – Eating canned soup may be convenient, but it can significantly raise the level of bisphenol A in a consumer’s body, according to a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health. The Harvard study found that people who consumed a serving of canned soup each day for five days had BPA levels more than 10 times higher in their urine then after they ate fresh soup daily for five days.
What drugs was your Thanksgiving turkey on?
Alternet - 11/21/2011.
By Martha Rosenberg – So far, 2011 has not been a great year for turkey producers. In May, an article in Clinical Infectious Diseases reported that half of U.S. meat from major grocery chains – turkey, beef, chicken and pork – harbors antibiotic resistant staph germs commonly called MRSA. Turkey had twice and even three times the MRSA of all other meats, in another study.
