Food safety bill writhes under heel of D.C. absurdity
Grist - 12/17/2010.
By Tom Philpott – And so we come to the puzzling apparent demise of the Food Safety Modernization Act, the much-obsessed-about and ill-starred S. 510. It went on life support last night after the Senate failed to pass a comprehensive bill to fund the government through September, into which S. 510 had been ludicrously tucked. Food Safety News' Helena Bottemiller reports that the bill's fate is now "uncertain."
Oops! How the Food Safety Bill Passed Congress, But Really Didn't
ABC News - 12/17/2010.
By Matthew Jaffe – Congress has a lot of odd rules, but one of the more basic ones is that revenue measures must originate in the House of Representatives, not the Senate. That rule now appears to have caused the demise of the food safety bill. Yes, the food safety bill that passed the House and then passed the Senate now looks unlikely to pass Congress this year.
USDA issues EIS for GE alfalfa
Feedstuffs - 12/16/2010.
By Jacqui Fatka – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Dec. 16 that the Animal Plant Health and Inspection Service (APHIS) has released its final environmental impact statement (EIS) that evaluates the environmental effects of deregulating genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa otherwise known as Roundup Ready (RR) alfalfa.
Young farmers need help from the USDA – and the next Farm Bill
Grist - 12/15/2010.
By Lindsey Lusher Shute – More and more Millennials are rejecting Cubicleville and instead opting for hands-on professions, including farming – and not a minute too soon.
