Aktan Askin of Lor Farm in Thorndike

Know Your Organic Producers!

Meet Aktan Askin and Erin McWalters of Lor Farm in Thorndike. Lor Farm, a sheep and goat dairy farm and cheese house, produces halloumi, ricotta, feta and sheep's milk yogurt based on recipes of Anatolian and Mediterranean origin. Aktan and Erin sell from the farm, at the Downtown Bangor Farmers' Market and at the Saturday Orono Farmers' Market. Aktan has been MOFGA's landscape coordinator and was a MOFGA journeyperson and volunteer. He will now be working for Fedco.

FDA approved drug produced in genetically engineered carrot cells

By Ramon Gonzalez – This past spring Popular Science reported on the U.S. Federal Drug Administration's approval of a drug for humans that was produced in genetically engineered plant cells. The drug, called Elelyso, is used to treat a disorder known as Gaucher disease which results from the lack of a specific enzyme. The earlier treatment for Gaucher disease was derived from hamster cells.
