Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
Common Ground Fair
Kennebec Journal - 9/21/2012.
The Common Ground Country Fair goes from today through Sunday at the Unity Fairgrounds. Gates open at 9 a.m. Sponsored by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, the fair features demonstrations, exhibits, organic and local foods, livestock exhibits and entertainment.
Gulf of Maine water temperature soars
Bangor Daily News - 9/20/2012.
By Mary Ann Bragg, Cape Cod Times – Sea surface temperatures from Cape Hatteras, N.C., to the Gulf of Maine were the highest ever recorded from January through June, federal officials said Tuesday. Above-average temperatures were pervasive, from the ocean’s floor to the surface, across the region and outward beyond the continental shelf.
Organic food good for overall health
Portland Press Herald - 9/20/2012.
Letter to the Editor – A front-page story on Sept. 6, "Studies reveal raw truths on organic foods," detailing a study released Sept. 4 by two Stanford doctors that compares organic with conventional farming, is hardly front-page news and is misleading at best.
Uncommon pies for Common Ground Fair
Portland Press Herald - 9/19/2012.
By Avery Yale Kamila – Bennett Collins started creating the wood-fired Harvest Moon Pizza he'll sell at this weekend's Common Ground Country Fair last fall. That's when he sowed the organic garlic at his Broadwing Farm in Bremen that will be used in the sauce. During the winter, he spent time tracking down organic and Maine-grown ingredients, and more recently, he's been making sauces and dough.
