Organic and Sustainable Agriculture News
A celebration of the English apple
The Independent - 10/15/2010.
By Michael McCarthy – Why might one feel passionate about English apples, but not about English green beans? For if you examine the proposition, is it not the case that Cox's Orange Pippins excite enthusiasm in many people when even the juiciest and most flavoursome English runner bean is unlikely to do so, although they are both in essence the same thing, namely seed pods?
Homage to the apple: 10 recipes
The Atlantic - 10/15/2010.
You probably knew it was coming: a slide show of recipes featuring one of the most popular fall ingredients. What you might not have expected are a couple of savory recipes in addition to sweets.
Doctor as farmers: how food prescriptions can save our cities
The Atlantic - 10/14/2010.
By Michel Nischan – I was recently asked to talk about Wholesome Wave's new Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program (FVRx) at the Roots of Change Conference in Los Angeles. We partner with Roots of Change and they throw amazing conferences, so the answer was YES! FVRx relies on health practitioners in underserved communities to serve as "dispensers" of "prescriptions" that can be redeemed for fresh fruits and vegetables at local farmers' markets.
Cook up a cool cross-promotion
American Express Open Forum - 10/14/2010.
By Jane Applegate – For six weeks in the fall, 55 members of the ‘Out on a Limb’ heirloom apple Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) visit the Rabelais cookbook store to pick up their apples. While they are in the store, many apple-lovers also buy a book about heirloom apples or a book of apple recipes.
