Hide Tanning Workshop
October 17, 2018
MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center
9 am to 2:30 pm

Join MOFGA and local instructors Trevanna Grenfell of The Wildwood Path and Sean Murphy of Murphy Family Farm for a day exploring the ancient skill of turning animal hides into soft leathers or beautiful furs. For farmers and hunters through the ages, the hide has been one of the most valuable parts of any animal – but only if they know how to treat it! We'll spend the day learning the basics of hide tanning in the traditional way, and you'll go home with the know-how and skills you need to start tanning on your own.

Bring your questions and your willingness to learn, but please contact us if you would like to bring your own hide so that we can determine whether your particular project fits with the workshop. We'll work on rabbit hides together and you'll have a chance to see demos of other types of hides so that you can get a feel for how to work with different styles. We will approach this skill with sensitivity and compassion, but hide tanning isn't for the faint of heart! Be prepared to see, touch, smell, and talk about raw animal hides – and to experience the magic of turning rawhide into leather!
