The Folk Arts Area presents demonstrations and classes in traditional Maine arts in its tents and open areas. Exhibits in the tents include: woods crafts, such as canoe building and porcupine quillwork; domestic arts, such as quilting and basket making; and rug hooking, among many others. The Maine Folk Life Center Tent (MFC) features exhibits, music, oral history interviews and the ever-popular bean-hole beans, which are served at noon each day of the Fair. The Folk Arts open area offers fairgoers the chance to try international folk dancing and hear the Balkan Women’s Choir, and offers a community countradance as well. The Belfast Shape Note Singers perform each year and invite audience participation.
Our blacksmith allows quality demonstrations of blacksmithing at the Fair and at other events throughout the year. During the Fair, a number of demonstrations will showcase the different skills and talents of Maine blacksmiths in creating traditional farm and home implements.
