MOFGA Events \ Farm Training Project Workshops

Weekly events, May through September

Designed to augment the on-farm learning of the farm apprenticeship program, MOFGA’s Farm Training Project (FTP) workshops follow an informal format, usually beginning with a farm tour followed by a presentation on the topic of the day.

All Farm Training Project events are online for 2020 due to COVID-19 safety concerns.

Organic Farming Principles and Practices – Crop Production

May 13, 2020 – Wednesday, 4 to 7 p.m. on ZOOM. Crop specialist, Caleb Goossen from MOFGA’s Farmer Programs department and Alex Ethier, MOFGA’s farmer-in-residence of Killdeer Croft Farm, led an introductory course in organic crop farming. Caleb covered theory and best practices for organic management of soils and crops, followed by a virtual tour of Killdeer Croft Farm to discuss farm plantings with Alex and Caleb. COVID-19 and Farm Work Safety on Zoom

Wednesday, May 20, 2020 – 5 p.m. with Villageside Farm on ZOOM. Join us electronically for a webinar on farm safety during the time of COVID-19. Villageside Farm will present safe operating procedures they have implemented on their vegetable farm to support their crew of workers as well as communication skills during this stressful time. There will be time for Q and A about best practices as well.

Come electronically discuss soil health management strategies including cover cropping, tarping, and permanent bed systems as we take a virtual tour of his farm. Wednesday, August 12, 2020 – 5 p.m. on Zoom. Join us electronically to learn about New Roots Cooperative Farm, a New American-owned cooperative in practice and learn about worker co-op farms, farmland co-ops, marketing co-ops, labor co-ops and equipment sharing co-ops. You'll learn about cooperative economic structure, democratic decision-making, and distribution of the surplus farmers collectively generate.

Whether you’re working as a farm hand, manager or apprentice it is never too soon to consider your options. Abby Sadauckas, Maine field agent for Land For Good and farmer of Apple Creek Farm in Bowdoinham will talk through how to start thinking about your future farm, the land base you’ll need and the variety of ways to achieve your farm dream.
