New Initiative Aims To Ease Maine's Farm Labor Shortage

September 6, 2020 – By Jennifer Mitchell, Maine Public – In recent decades, farms have faced difficulties in finding enough people to work. This year, the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry decided to try and do something about it with an initiative called FarmingForME, including a social media blitz, an awareness and education campaign and a new jobs web link dedicated to open farming positions.

September 1, 2020 – By Mary Bilecki, Brattleboro Reformer – More than 11 percent of farm work in Vermont is accomplished by seasonal H-2A Temporary Visa farm workers, a majority of whom are Jamaican — an estimated 400 individuals. Established in 1986 as part of the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the H-2A Visa Program allows agricultural businesses in the U.S. to hire temporary foreign workers for seasonal positions that they would have otherwise been unable to fill with domestic workers.
