Cole's Quince, a Maine heritage apple variety.

More varieties

The farmers at Blackbird Rise in Palermo are pleased to announce a fundraiser for The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) to support its educational programs.

For every $25 you contribute to MOFGA, you will receive a 2-year-old, grafted, MOFGA certified organic apple tree as thanks for your support!

Each tree will be one of nearly 100 varieties of rare and historic Maine apples found in the Maine Heritage Orchard. These pieces of Maine’s pomological history are available while supplies last!

The Maine Heritage Orchard will be home to hundreds of rare and important historic Maine apples. Many of these varieties have been nearly lost to history and are not available to the public, commercially or otherwise.

As an extension of this preservation effort, we also want to repopulate the dooryards and orchards of the state with these heirloom apples, protecting and sharing this critical genetic diversity and cultural heritage for future generations to enjoy.

Because some of these varieties are so rare, we are looking for stewards who would be willing to be contacted in the future for scionwood should anything happen to the sister tree in the Heritage Orchard collection.

Trees will be available for pick-up at the Spring Orchard Planting event that will be held at MOFGA in Unity on April 12, 2014. There you can learn how to plant and care for your tree.

To contribute, simply download the form and mail it with a check made out to MOFGA.
