40-Year-old organic farming organization changes leadership

August 18, 2020 – By NOFA, The Landmark – In 1982, the Massachusetts Chapter of the then Natural Organic Farmers Association (NOFA) was born. At that time, it was one of four New England state chapters of the organization, whose purpose was to educate aspiring organic farmers on best practices and to provide a network for their joint bootstrap education.

USDA Moves Forward with Sweeping Plans to Prevent Fraud in Organics

August 17, 2020 – By Lisa Held, Civil Eats – In 2017, The Washington Post reported on a shipment of 36 million pounds of soybeans that were shipped from Ukraine to Turkey to California and sold as organic, even though they had been fumigated with pesticides not approved under the USDA Organic standard and originally sold into the conventional market. And in 2019, an Iowa grain broker was sentenced to 10 years in prison for selling more than $142 million in fraudulent organic animal feed to Midwest farmers between 2010 and 2017.

August 12, 2020 – Reuters – Mexico will gradually phase out use of the herbicide glyphosate by the time the current administration ends in late 2024, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Wednesday, following a ministerial spat over the product.

Organic diet intervention significantly reduces urinary glyphosate levels in U.S. children and adults

August 11, 2020 – By John Fagan et al., Environmental Research – An organic diet was associated with significantly reduced urinary levels of glyphosate and AMPA. The reduction in glyphosate and AMPA levels was rapid, dropping to baseline within three days. This study demonstrates that diet is a primary source of glyphosate exposure and that shifting to an organic diet is an effective way to reduce body burden of glyphosate and its main metabolite, AMPA.

Why We Oppose Golden Rice

Small farmers and NGOs across all of Asia oppose the introduction of GMO Golden Rice. However, the media, especially in the West, has mischaracterised this opposition as being based in ignorance and/or as orchestrated by Greenpeace, an NGO with Western roots. In this article, the Stop Golden Rice Network (SGRN), which has members from every part of Asia, puts that record straight. In the hope that future media coverage will be more accurate, SGRN sets out its scientific and social justice reasons for opposing GMO Golden Rice. These range from lack of proven efficacy and negligible safety testing to the undermining of food sovereignty, democratic rights, and general nutrition.
