Four Reasons Why Cows (and Organic Dairies) are so Amazing!

April 10, 2025

Cows are remarkable creatures, capable of turning something as simple as grass into high-quality, nutritious protein that sustains millions of people. They also play a role in sustainable farming systems, cycling nutrients back into the soil through manure, which acts as a natural fertilizer. Beyond their productivity, cows are gentle, social animals.

Here’s four reasons why cows, and organic dairies, are so amazing!

1.) Their Unique Digestive System

Cows’ unique digestive system allows them to turn grass into milk. This incredible ability is due to their four-chambered stomach, particularly the rumen. The rumen acts as a fermentation chamber, housing billions of microorganisms — bacteria, protozoa, and fungi — that break down tough plant fibers like cellulose, which most animals cannot digest.

2.) Turning Grass into Milk

Cows’ efficient digestive system allows them to extract energy and protein from low-quality forages, converting it into nutrient-rich milk. Milk alone provides a rich source of calcium, protein, and essential vitamins like B12, which is vital for human health and nearly impossible to obtain from plants.

3.) Natural Fertilizer

Cows also play a role in sustainable farming systems, cycling nutrients back into the soil through manure, which acts as a natural fertilizer. Their ability to upcycle plant matter into essential nutrients highlights their ecological and agricultural value.

4.) Plus, they’re adorable!
